Building a Better World Through Sport

Building a Better World Through Sport

The August edition of the ELMS Newsletter puts the spotlight on the unique ability of sport to bring a positive change in society. It seeks to offer its readers some truly inspiring impact stories that highlight the unique ways in which sport can be used to break down barriers, help improve people’s health and wellbeing and foster a strong sense of community in us.

To begin with, we have an exclusive interview with India’s sole individual Olympic gold medallist, Abhinav Bindra, on the ability of elite athletes to drive social change and community development through sport.

Next, we catch up with Ian Wright, Badminton World Federation’s Director of Development, to find out how BWF’s flagship program “Shuttle Time” has made a positive impact on the life of children coming from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Then we have a guest article on the role of organized sport and physical activity in helping women living in urban slums overcome their challenges.

And finally, we bring to you two impact stories based on ELMS Foundations’ work on physical literacy and the challenges we had to overcome to conduct PE teacher training programs in two states.

We hope these stories inspire you and help you reflect on how you too can harness the power of sport to bring about social change. If you have a story to share and would like to contribute to future editions of our newsletter, please reach out to us at We look forward to hearing from you.
